Johnson Service Group has an immediate need for an Applications Engineer!

The Applications Engineer will develop and optimize downstream processes for new and existing products using extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, and other thermoforming processes, and will work with customers to optimize processes to meet their needs, including traveling to different locations to participate in third party trials. This role will be part of the 'hands on' arm of Research and Development and will work closely with both internal polymer chemists and external customers to create, optimize, and scale finished products. The Applications Engineer will perform prototyping and application tests to ensure products meet customer needs.

• Develop processes for new extrusion applications to meet company goals and customer specifications (including, but not limited to, films, profile extrusion, thermoforming, injection molded parts, adhesives and coatings).
• Support the development, testing, and performance evaluation of materials
• Perform basic market analysis to determine likely customers and future market needs.
• Create and manage inputs into the material property database for all formulations and products used.
• Work with customers to establish required design inputs and develop specifications for any gaps identified in the data set.
• Aid in the development of new tests and evaluation methods.
• Coordinate with internal and external production teams to understand manufacturing needs.
• Propose material and/or processing improvements that are agreeably “value-added” across the associated teams.
• Work with suppliers to develop appropriate tests that effectively evaluate material and product performance.
• Assist Process Engineers in the development of process parameters or machine improvements to resolve any quality needs.
• Research ways to implement new technology to continuously improve product performance.
• Work with Process Engineers to ensure employees are properly trained to reflect standard operating procedures and maintain quality standards.

• Associate in Applied Science or Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Engineering, or similar discipline.
• 10+ years of hands-on experience in polymer extrusion environment with 5+ years interacting with customers.
• Experience in a pilot scale or scale-up environment is highly desirable. • Excellent instrument skills including the ability to repair and modify instruments.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel – organizing and graphing data.
• Hands on experience with extrusion equipment across multiple process types, designing mechanical properties tests and streamlining testing workflows.
• Proactive, detail-oriented and has an eye for efficiency.
• Experience optimizing high-volume experimental/instrumental workflows and presenting data in a meaningful way.
• Experience in compounding or melt processing of thermoplastics.
• Ability to rapidly learn new tests, instruments, and procedures.
• Relevant industry experience (polymers).
• Strong instrument skills and the ability to improvise repairs and improvements.
• Proficient in organizing/graphing data in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience in material handling and testing.
• Clear, professional, courteous oral and written communication skills.
