Will work under the direction and supervision of the City Engineer on all aspects of Civil Engineering in a Municipal environment.  These task will essentially be “ground down” engineering for the built and natural environment.  This will include various aspects of sewer, stormwater, hydrology, hydraulics, roadway, traffic, flood, and utility engineering.  Projects will range from pipe sizing, installation, maintenance, flow analysis, condition analysis to roadway design/construction/striping, pedestrian and ADA concerns / compliance or to FEMA flood regulations.

The position will include the production of engineering work products as an individual contributor under the direction and oversight of the City Engineer.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree required in Civil, Environmental, Agricultural or closely related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution.  Engineering Technology is not acceptable. 
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE), Engineer Intern (EI), or Professional Engineering License preferred.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required.
  • Minimum of two years full-time professional experience as an individual contributor preparing construction plans is preferred. 
  • Two years of full time Civil 3d experience preferred.
  • Hec-2, Hec-Ras, Hec-HMS, Arc-Gis experience preferred.
  • Proof of degree/ transcripts, certificate or registration will be required at the time of hire.

  • Use Civil 3d and other computer assisted engineering and design software / equipment to prepare engineering documents.
  • Assist in the preparation, modification or drafting of constructions plans, details, reports, specifications and designs for various municipal projects.
  • May perform field work or inspection as needed.
  • Will prepare calculations, CAD drawings, and construction documents under the direction of the City Engineer.
  • Participate and collaborate in project teams including other members of City staff or outside developers / agencies with diverse backgrounds, engaging in creative / critical thought to the betterment of projects.
  • Interpret sketches, details, regulations, TCA, construction documents, etc.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of relevant general “ground down” civil engineering concepts including sewer, fluid hydraulics, stormwater hydrology, surveying / topographic mapping, erosion control, grading, utility design / maintenance, traffic control / flow, roadway design, drainage design, FEMA flood mapping / analysis and ADA requirements.
  • Technical writing and effective verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the public, contractors, City staff, and elected officials.
  • Solid understanding of local land development requirements, permits and processes.
  • Ability to perform field inspections and construction oversight of City projects.
  • Assist the City Engineer in providing support services including submittal review, plans review, preparation of comments, clarification of construction documents, etc.

Physical Requirements:
Work requires moderate physical effort with extended sitting, standing, walking on uneven surfaces, driving and the occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.  Work requires the ability to visit construction sites, walk rough terrain, reach remote locations which may require using steps, ladders, unpaved pathways, etc. and carry survey and sampling equipment.
