Johnson Service Group is looking for a Fiber Chemist for our client in Huntington Beach.

The Fiber Chemist is primarily responsibility for leading research focused on leveraging properties of biologically derived polymeric materials for use in making fiber products. The scientist has extensive hands-on experience in experimental spun fiber research, preferably including both melt and wet solution spinning; and with fundamental knowledge of the chemistry of biologically based materials, including mastery of methods and tools for manipulating their properties through chemical, enzymatic and other approaches. She/he oversees fiber research projects spanning from small, bench-scale experiments relying primarily on laboratory techniques, to designing and building pilot-scale machines capable of demonstrating scalability potential.

As the fiber group leader, she/he supervises research associates and technicians and advises fellow scientists on the topics of hers/his expertise. She/he guides research and runs experimental designs and engineering trials, while mentoring scientific development. Outside of the group, she/he is expected to establish strong cross-functional interactions, in particular with fermentation, extraction and engineering teams. The scientist is a master of existing fiber technologies, but can build on those technologies using a variety of engineering, chemical, and biochemical approaches.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead the development of new fiber technology programs from discovery through product technology demonstration and commercialization.
  • Invent, implement, and validate new designs and resin formulations and processing technologies with team of direct reports to create high-value products.
  • Produce feasibility analysis, studies and prototypes to demonstrate solutions for approved fiber programs.
  • In depth understanding of material structure-properties and routinely share the importance/ effects if properties with other team members.
  • Support new product developments from concept generation, polymer chemistry, composition, formulations, through commercialization.
  • Work with product development, customers and partners to address technical issues and opportunities. Use content to help formulate technology needs and participate in product roadmap options with team.
  • Work with industry partners, Universities, independent R&D companies and internal resources to find solutions to problems.
  • Conduct training and ensure that proper analytical and test methods and SOPs are in place.
  • Establish specifications based on advanced analytical tests and summarize data per various industry standards.
  • Determine, present and purchase instrumentation and equipment needs to achieve company goals.
  • Develop and implement strategies to defend our technology from competition, including patent protection.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced deadline driven environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Submit routine reports to department director and performs other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of polymer science research and development
  • 5+ years in fiber research and development
  • MS Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science. PhD preferred.
  • Expertise in fiber polymer processing and characterization of physical, chemical and mechanical properties of materials and composites.
  • Strong research skills, with the ability to apply new research to commercial products.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

  • Up to date on emerging technologies in polymer and fiber characterization.
  • The ability to come up with new and innovative ways to solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated success in the development of new products and scale-up.
  • A breadth of technical knowledge and a keen interest in learning from others.
  • Working knowledge of analytical instruments.
