Johnson Service Group is assisting our global manufacturing client with a Protection and Control Field Service Engineer in Raleigh, NC. This is a field role and will require large amounts of travel to customer sites across North America.


This role is responsible for commissioning and testing protection, control systems delivered into industrial and utility applications in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements. The Field Service Engineer ensures a consistent, coordinated, and cohesive project engineering approach to Protection & Control systems.


  • Assist customers at every stage of protection, control systems support, including start-up, commissioning of equipment & configuration, planned maintenance, monitoring performance, diagnosing system problems remotely as well as responding to customer emergencies when necessary.
  • Prepare proposal/presentation of engineering projects/programs (provision of bills of materials, estimated engineering hours, etc.)
  • Uses standard processes and tools applicable to Factory and Site Acceptance Testing.
    • Knowledge and utilization of various test equipment such as Omicron, Doble, Volt meters and other test gear.
  • Assigns tasks to and coordinates work with entry level engineers, technicians, administrative staff.
  • Experience in Substation Control systems, specifically IEC61850 based technology protection & control-based systems.
  • Knowledge of Automation & Communications interface is a plus.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Candidates must have authorization that would permit them to work in the United States
  • Knowledge of ANSI/IEEE protection and control application for transmission lines, distribution feeders, transformers, busbars, generators, and capacitor banks for utility and industrial substations.
  • Working knowledge of modern control systems, digital substations, etc.
  • Creation and execution of test plans for factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).
  • Knowledge of programming languages including VBA, SCIL, C, C++ and C#.
