Mechanical Design Engineer Job Description
Johnson Service Group (JSG) is a nationally recognized Contract Engineering and Technical Staffing firm specializing in Engineering and Manufacturing. We are currently recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer in Chicago. 

Position Summary:     Designs new products and makes improvements to existing products. May evaluate products, parts or processes for cost efficiency and reliability. Works with other members of the engineering staff to ensure that production is completed in a timely manner. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and initiate new product development for current and new applications
  • Carry out complete testing of new or revised products
  • Recommend new product technologies and new product applications
  • Analyze customer application and integrate product development into a new system development
  • Coordinate and initiate Research and Development activities
  • Initiate cost reduction ideas and integrate them into new product development
  • Generate Engineering reports and laboratory test reports
  • Accumulate documentation to substantiate patent applications
  • Coordinate the manufacturing launch of new/revised products including establishing goals, training team members and evaluating results
  • Confer with sales, production and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods and quality results
  • Desire to work in the lab and on the assembly line for testing purposes
  • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested


  • Knowledge of CAD systems (AutoCAD, Inventor)
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, electronics, materials, combustion, assembly
  • Familiarity with agency approvals (Knowledge of UL 197 Standard and NSF would be a bonus)
  • Project management – ability to organize and manage multiple products
  • Quality orientation and high attention to detail
  • Ability to work with vendors, customers and employees
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment
  • Ability to perform problem analysis and problem resolution

Required education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent
  • At least 5 years of related experience and/or training
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
