Johnson Service Group is seeking a Fermentation Research Associate in Huntington Beach.

Job Responsibilities

  • Preparation of bioreactors, including calibration of probes, pump calibration, and vessel setup.
  • Prepare media and stock solutions precisely.
  • Able to set up and operate bench scale bioreactors independently.
  • Plan effectively from an experiment outline and execute bioreactor experiments with high precision.
  • Trouble shoot equipment, recognize equipment or process issues and provide solutions.
  • Perform detailed fermentation data analysis.
  • Effectively communicate results to team members.
  • Perform routine maintenance on common laboratory equipment.
  • Follow SOPs and safety protocols.
  • Participates in meetings and present analysis.
  • Monitoring bioreactors through sampling, off-line measurements, checking online parameters, and accurate recording of data.
  • Operate bioreactors through software interface and input data accurately.
  • Respond to out-of-spec fermentation parameters in a timely manner.
  • Follow established processes and procedures to ensure consistency in operations, quality assurance standards.
  • Communicate critical information to appropriate parties.
  • Perform routine maintenance on common laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain area and equipment in safe, clean, and good working order.
  • Communicate results and challenges to key stakeholders.
  • Other duties and projects as needed


  • B.S. in Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 1-3+ years of relevant fermentation experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of fermentation.
  • Ability to in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • A sense of urgency, determination, and confidence to support company mission.
  • Well organized, clear communicator in both oral and written forms.
  • Capable of high performance in independent work as well as in team settings
  • Experience with mechanical, process piping and/or brewery, distillery, and fermentation tanks is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written


  • Basic understanding of fermentation and microbial metabolism.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment including bioreactor and analytical equipment.
  • Demonstrate degree of independence, troubleshooting effectiveness and minimal execution errors.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Demonstrates care for quality of data, precision, and attention to detail.
  • Good time-management to complete tasks efficiently within stated timelines.
  • Capable of working effectively and positively in a team environment and following detailed instructions.
