Thermal/Combustion Engineer Job Listing Description:

JSG is looking for a thermal/combustion engineer with 10-15 years’ experience to join the technical engineering team. Candidate must have both thermal design and field experience for consideration. Engineer will report directly to the Manager of Pipelines and Thermal Systems.

 The thermal engineer will work directly with other thermal engineers on the team, other engineering disciplines, plant personnel, project management and outside vendors while developing and executing thermal systems projects for manufacturing. Individual will be involved with designing, optimizing, troubleshooting, and commissioning key processes including industrial dryers, calcining equipment, and air heating systems.

Design:

 • Responsible for designing thermal systems and equipment layout/integration, ensuring reliable and efficient design while meeting all NFPA and FM requirements, along with specifications • Perform drying and heat transfer calculations • Perform flow measurement calculations for various conditions • Calculate required sizes for burners, blowers, ductwork, piping, fuel trains, valves, dampers, insulation, orifice plates, metering equipment • Develop written Scope of Work for new projects, detailing all new thermal equipment • Procure equipment estimates from various vendors • Create equipment specifications for key pieces of heating equipment: burners, combustion blowers, ductwork, fuel trains, metering equipment, air/fuel ratio controls • Develop general arrangement layouts for major pieces of drying/heating equipment • Review and approval of engineering drawings • Attend project design meetings, actively participating and providing ideas for optimizing project • Provide frequent troubleshooting and technical assistance to manufacturing facilities • Develop designs to meet unique local emissions limits (NOx, CO, VOCs) • Perform research for new equipment/solutions to improve safety, efficiency, and reliability.

Field Activities:

 • Participate as Thermal Lead for various equipment commissioning outages • Be able to travel to various plants across North America • Responsible for testing and documenting new and existing safety devices.

• Inspect installation, ensuring all drawings/designs match, create as-built drawing mark-ups • Setting and tuning burners and various air/fuel ratio control equipment • Measuring air & gas flow with orifice plates and manometers, calculate air/fuel ratios • Testing emissions with various field devices • Experience with basic electrical troubleshooting, as related to flame safety and burner management • Visit equipment manufacturers for factory-acceptance testing • Develop detailed, concise trip reports in a timely manner post trip • Actively raise any observed safety concerns to plant management immediately.

Key Skills Required:

• Field experience in previous rolls, both for commissioning/outages and investigation/troubleshooting trips • Must be capable to work in field with no supervision for gathering information and evaluating equipment • Hands-on experience with industrial process heating equipment and various types of burners/controls • Must have experience setting parallel position air/fuel ratio controls • Strong ability to read and understand mechanical drawings • Fundamental understanding of electrical schematics and P&IDs specific to flame safety • Understanding of combustion emissions, techniques to meet various limits, including flue gas recirculation • Firm working knowledge in mechanical design • Experience with various flame safety equipment models • Expert level experience with NFPA requirements (specifically 86) • Knowledge of regulatory and safety compliance programs • Strong capabilities using Microsoft Suite, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams • Experience working with a remote team and having frequent virtual meetings (Teams, Webex, Zoom, Skype) • Must be able to create own schedule, provide progress updates, manage deliverables, communicate with various project members independently • Strong leadership and communication skills (verbal and written) • Ability to work in a team environment • A high level of organizational skills and the ability to effectively work on multiple assignments and prioritize tasks.

Qualifications Required:

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (preferably Mechanical Engineering) with prior experience with combustion, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics. • Must be able to travel frequently, including to all 50 states, Canada, and Mexico o Travel up to 50%
