Job Description

Johnson Service Group is working with an industry leader in San Diego who is in need of a Controls Engineer!

This is a direct placement opportunity to support the development, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial control systems across their global manufacturing operations. This role contributes to the implementation, optimization, and sustainment of PLC, motion, and drive based automation systems used in the production of specialized manufacturing equipment.

This is a full-time onsite position based in San Diego, California, requiring close collaboration with manufacturing, maintenance, and engineering teams.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
General
•     Assist in maintaining and updating machine control programs, electrical schematics, PLC code, and commissioning documentation.
•     Provide technical support for production equipment through troubleshooting and participation in control system upgrades.
•     Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, maintenance, and quality teams to improve equipment reliability and process performance.
•     Support the creation and maintenance of technical documentation, including work instructions, user manuals, and training materials.
•     Support troubleshooting and diagnosis of existing PLC, HMI, motion control, and drive systems.
•     Assist in preventive maintenance planning and execution related to controls and electrical systems.
•     Participate in system testing and validation to ensure performance, quality, and safety standards are met.
•     Support training activities for operators and maintenance personnel.
•     Follow established safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance requirements.
•     Assist in the development and implementation of control systems for new or custom manufacturing equipment.
•     Support PLC, HMI, SCADA, motion control, and drive programming under the guidance of senior engineers.
•     Assist with system integration of sensors, actuators, motion systems, and industrial communication networks.

Required Qualifications
•     Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
•     2–5 years of experience in industrial automation or controls engineering.
•     Working knowledge of PLC based control systems.
•     Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation.
•     Strong problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
•     Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 20%.

Preferred Qualifications
•     Experience with Automation Direct PLC platforms.
•     Exposure to Trio Motion Control systems or similar motion platforms.
•     Experience with ABB variable frequency drives and/or Baldor drives and motors.
•     Familiarity with Siemens and/or Allen Bradley PLC systems.
•     Experience supporting manufacturing or industrial equipment environments.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements 
•     Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment, including exposure to industrial equipment, electrical systems, and moderate noise levels.
•     Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work near machinery for extended periods.
•     Ability to lift up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.

Salary range $115K-$130K Depending on qualifications.
