Job Description

The Environmental Inspector is the Company’s authorized representative and is to inspect and ensure that all field project construction is being conducted in compliance with the applicable environmental plans/procedures and the requirements of federal, regional, state, and local environmental permits or approvals, as prepared and approved by the Company Environmental Department, and approved site-specific environmental plan(s). 

Prior to construction, project-specific environmental materials will be provided to the Environmental Inspector, which include detailed plans, procedures, and environmental conditions to be complied with before, during, and after construction.


The Environmental Inspector will:
  • Using stop work authority, will immediately stop work activity, and notify Contractor supervision of unsafe conditions and/or acts and ensure all site personnel are aware of their obligation to do so as well.
  • Review and understand contractor Safe Work Practices & Job Safety/Hazard Analysis for the work they are assigned to oversee and hold contractor accountable to execute the work to the per the procedures. This includes participation in daily tailgate/tailboard meetings and field level hazard assessments (FLHA).
  • Monitor construction and track compliance with all regulatory approvals, work permits, contract documents, Company environmental policies, specifications and commitments made during and after the planning process. If non-compliance is identified, ensure required corrective action(s) are communicated with the Contractor, CM, and inspection staff. 
  • Provide environmental leadership, expertise, and guidance to other inspection personnel during the work.
  • Ensure compliance to Contractor’s site-specific environmental plan(s).
  • Verifies all applicable environmental permits are in place prior to commencement of work.
  • Provides consultative advice to the Construction Manager on the implementation of recommendations made in pertinent environmental documentation applicable to the project.
  • Offers practical advice to the Construction Manager on the possible resolution for items of environmental concern or potential impacts that may arise during the construction phases.
  • Ensures all effluents and waste generated by construction activities are disposed of in an authorized manner.
  • Conducts the required site-specific sampling and provides interpretation of results (e.g., water, soil, biological, asbestos, NORMs, PCBs, etc.).
  • Liaise with appropriate local, provincial/state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Negotiate with regulatory agencies for necessary environmental permits.
  • Participates in discussions and negotiations with landowners as requested by the land agent.
  • Coordinates on-site environment-related visits, audits, and inspections with external and/or internal stakeholders.
  • Remains current in public events and changes in regulatory requirements that may affect project plans.
  • Facilitates meetings and/or training sessions to ensure site personnel are aware of the environmental protection plan and procedures.
  • Participates in meetings and issue resolution discussions as required with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., safety, progress, operations, construction, Prime Construction Contractor).
  • Conducts inspections on all contractor equipment delivered to site that will be utilized on the project’s construction to ensure equipment meets environmental standards.
  • Ensures environmental design deviations are approved and documented.
  • Work with the Contractor to ensure that environment-related commitments are implemented.
  • Create and foster a positive work environment and a proactive/mature safety culture with the inspection staff, demonstrating commitment to our Environment Principles.
  • Identify, and support resolution of, construction environmental non-conformance issues and notify Construction Manager.
  • Provide environmental leadership, expertise, and guidance to the project personnel. 
  • Participate in incident investigations, and lead investigations where required; update incident management and reporting system.
  • Records management associated with construction environmental documentation.
  • Identify innovation and value creation opportunities related to construction environmental aspects.
  • Participation in lessons learned, close-out meeting(s).  
  • Verify that the Contractors Environmental Program is being followed.
  • Conduct site environment walk downs and note any discrepancies.
  • Complete the daily inspection reports in accordance with applicable Company Inspection Standards.
Qualifications:
  • University Degree and/or Diploma in a related field.
  • 2 years experience
