Job Description

Johnson Service Group (JSG) is seeking 4 Sr. Technical Writer / Editors for a 1 year contract assignment in Richland, WA.  This role offers a W2 hourly pay rate with time and a half for overtime, per diem, and mobilization/demobilization.  

U.S. Citizenship is required.
Pay Rate - $45.00 to $50.00 Max  per hour pending education and experience

Position Summary
For the Technical Writer/Editor role, the primary need is for helping preparing procedures for two (2) separate departments: Engineering and Records Management. Some duties would include, but are not limited to:
Formatting, tech editing, reference scrubs, acronym scrubs, sending documents out for review, incorporating comments, making specified changes, creating PDF with correct track changes showing, routing documents for signature. Candidates with experience with administrative and engineering procedures are preferred, but not required. Candidates selected will work with procedure/requirement SMEs that will be managing the technical content. Candidates will assist with the many procedures (and guides) to be created/revised as needed.

Job Responsibilities
Plans, writes, edits, proofreads, and coordinates the production of simple to highly complex documents and other print and electronic media for accuracy, consistency, professional quality, and conformance to appropriate style guide. May provide operational direction to a technical editing staff.

JOB DIMENSIONS
A. Supervision Received
• Receives little to moderate operational and functional direction from responsible supervisor.

B. Supervision Exercised
• May provide supervision or operational direction to a small staff of technical editors or may act as lead editor on a large assignment.
• May provide supervision or operational direction to other technical editing staff and document production groups.

C. Contacts
• Internal customers.
• Other members of technical editing, graphics, and document formatting staff, vendors; and document control and reprographic centers.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Plans, writes, edits, and proofreads simple to highly complex documents and other print and electronic media. Plans format of documents, organizes content, edits text and graphics, and provides instructions for final reproduction. Works on-line as required.
2. Reviews document requirements (including content, budget and schedule) with customers. Recommends and coordinates document formatting, graphic design, and reprographics, resolves editorial and/or content issues and provides any additional editorial support. May assist in publication planning, strategies, and organization.
3. Edits and/or rewrites draft documents. Ensures that the material is structured and formatted logically and resolves inconsistencies.
4. May prepare cost estimates, including costs for graphics, document formatting, and reprographics.
5. Monitors job progress and alerts responsible supervisor when schedules appear to be in jeopardy. May provide production data for performance metrics.
6. Responsible for electronic file management which may include access and configuration control.
7. Maintains document and resource files (photos and other support matter).
8. May maintain office style guide.
9. May conduct research to support document production.
10. Assists other technical editing staff, as required. May review work of other technical editing staff members.
11. May participate as a member or a lead on a production team on large and complex documents.
12. Coordinates schedules between production teams such as publications, reprographics, and vendors.

JOB KNOWLEDGE
  • Technical writing and editing skills normally acquired through specialized education/training in English, technical communications, or journalism.
  • Thorough knowledge of grammatical rules, spelling, composition, and style.
  • Ability to work to a style guide.
  • Ability to perform substantive edits, write original text, and identify and apply appropriate level of edit based on considerations such as customer expectations, audience, visibility, and corporate standards.
  • Online editing/proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency with standard document formatting/editing/production software, including electronic comment incorporation, importing graphic files, formatting tables, and developing and applying templates.
  • Knowledge of standard editing/proofreading marks.
  • Basic vocabulary of the relevant technical disciplines.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current production methods and techniques, including graphics, document formatting, and photographic processes.
  • Knowledge of basic publication cost estimating/reporting methods.
  • Effective interpersonal and leadership skills in communication with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Professional customer service skills.
  • May participate in Six Sigma activities.
  • Continually demonstrates sustained commitment to "Zero Accidents” policy and support for company safety program through personal safe behavior/work practices, following all safety rules and procedures and reporting unsafe work practices/situations.

ADDENDUM
Coordinates highly complex jobs independently or may participate as publications representative on multi-disciplined groups planning and executing major projects. Complexity is determined by technical terminology, length, scope, production methods, and client direction. May provide supervision or operational direction and functional guidance to a small staff of technical editors. Monitors group budget and makes recommendations to management.
