FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Independently performs Instrument Engineering activities for all phases of instrument development and equipment design for project(s) of moderate size and complexity

- Performs all conventional aspects of Instrument Engineering and application of independent judgment for the evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard design engineering criteria, methods, and procedures

- Completes assignments with objectives requiring the investigation of a number of variables

- Provides some technical guidance to less experienced drafting or engineering personnel

- Meets with clients’ technical staff to discuss technical information and features

- Prepares sketches and performs calculations for detailed segment(s) of project(s)

- Prepares equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions for approval

- Evaluates vendors’ bids and drawings to assure compliance with specifications

- Communicates equipment design to client and other disciplines

- Reviews and approves design drawings for assigned segment(s) of project(s)

- Participates in reviews of Process Flow Diagrams and Piping and Instrument Diagrams

- Participates in the preparation of equipment lists, instrument index, loop sheets, I/O diagrams, panel drawings and specifications for instruments

- Monitors subcontracted technical services’ activities

- Participates in preparation of design guides, guide specifications, and contract proposals

- Participates in plant start-ups and field assignments as required

- Participates in equipment inspections at vendors’ facilities

- Ensures that production of drawings, specifications, reports and analysis meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements

- Participates with construction personnel concerning constructability issues as related to field conditions, sequencing and scheduling of construction activities

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

- Minimum of a 4-year degree in Chemical, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

- Active registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)

- Minimum of 10 years of experience in Instrumentation and Controls Engineering (or equivalent working knowledge and experience)

- Proficiency in utilizing various computer software packages

- Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific tables and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents

- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community

- Ability to effectively present information to senior management

- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probabilities and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry

- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations

- Ability to occasionally conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site to gather operating data and equipment information (requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus)
